Fiskebäckskil, situated approx.1,5 hours drive north of Gothenburg and not far from the Norwegian border, is an old and picturesque little community on the island of Skaftö (connected with a bridge to the mainland) near the Gullmar Fjord. It was originally a fishing village, and developed during the 19th century into a prosperous shipping community. It was during this time that the wealthy skippers built themselves big and fine houses and were thus prepared when the seaside resort era started at the turn of the century. Fiskebäckskil became elegant and fashionable and still host many summer inhabitants. The famous artist Carl Wilhelmsson originated from here and his studio is preserved and inhabited by his relatives (a couple of minutes walk from Gullmarstrand Hotel). Reproductions of his paintings can be seen at the Gullmarsstrand Hotel on the waterfront and also at Saltarvet, an art museum approx. 15 min walk from the hotel.
Next to Gullmarstrand Hotel is a long sandy beach called Bökeviken.
Lysekil
Situated on the outermost tip of a peninsula and opposite Fiskebäckskil (and Gullmarstrand Hotel – ferry takes 15 minutes) - with the Gullmar fjord to the east and the ocean to the west - there is always water in sight. Once a fishing village, Lysekil is now a town that gives emphasis to tourism. The 10 000 inhabitants of the community grow to about 30 000 when all the summertime regulars have arrived.
The summer offers a carnival, a jazz festival and outdoors concerts with renowned performers. Enjoy the many restaurants, cafes, shops and swimming spots, deep sea fishing, sailing, horse-riding, scuba diving or stroll the lanes of Gamlestan (Old Town), the original Lysekil of the 18th century. Visit the Maritime House and the provincial museum Vikarvet. Then continue along the water until you reach the Stångehuvud nature reserve. Bring your swimming costume and enjoy the fantastic view of the archipelago. This area was saved from the stone cutting industry and now offers botanical walks with a unique fauna.
